The Roman Fort of Morbium, also known as Vinovium, is an ancient Roman fortification located in Piercebridge, Durham, England. It served as a strategic point at a river crossing.

History+

Roman presence in the Piercebridge area dates back to approximately 70 AD, possibly to secure a ford or ferry on the River Tees. A civilian settlement emerged around 125 AD, followed by a military installation south of the river in the late 2nd century. However, the fortifications visible today on the north side of the river were not constructed until between 260 and 270 AD, when other Roman settlements began to decline in importance. The fort was maintained until about 350 AD and was inhabited until the 6th century, although some theories suggest abandonment in the early 5th century. It was one of four forts along Dere Street in what is now County Durham.
