Roman Castle (Eastkastell) Neckarburken

The presence of Roman structures in Neckarburken was already suspected in the early 19th century due to numerous finds. The first targeted excavations at the East Fort took place in 1881, followed by systematic investigations by the Imperial Limes Commission between 1892 and 1894. The approximately 6400 m² East Fort, an irregular quadrangle with three gates, was likely built in Trajanic times around 100 AD. It underwent several construction phases, typical for numerus camps of the Odenwald Limes. A building inscription dating between 145 and 161 AD confirms the stationing of the Numerus Brittonum Elantiensium.
