Roman Castle Pone Navata

The complex was built in the 4th century on the trapezoidal plateau of Sibrik Hill. Its irregular shape adapted to the topography. The fortification featured a wall thickness of 1.1 to 1.2 meters, complemented by horseshoe-shaped side towers and fan-shaped corner towers. Archaeological finds, including coins, suggest a foundation in the 320s, although newer research does not rule out an origin in the 350s or 360s. After the death of Emperor Valentinian I around 375, the fort was possibly abandoned and its garrison relocated. A later powerful square burgus, erected at the site of the former gate, remained in use until the province was abandoned. Roman wall remains and a medievally repaired tower bear witness to the long use of the site. Slavic settlers gave the fort the name Visegrád, meaning “High Castle,” in the 9th century.

The Pone Navata fort is located on Sibrik Hill in Visegrád, in Pest County, in the Central Hungary region, Hungary, at an elevation of approx. 182 m above sea level.

The remains of the Roman fort are accessible today and can be visited by the public.
