The Roman fortlet Rötelsee, constructed in the late 2nd century, is an integral part of the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is located near Welzheim.

History+

The fortlet of Rötelsee was constructed in the late 2nd century, approximately 40 meters behind the Roman imperial border. It served as an outpost for a unit of ten to twenty soldiers responsible for monitoring a section of the Limes. The Imperial Limes Commission conducted initial investigations as early as 1895. A comprehensive excavation in 1974, led by Dieter Planck, revealed the complete ground plan of the stone fortification. Finds of coins from the reign of Emperor Gallienus (253–260) suggest that the site existed until the abandonment of the Limes around 259/260 AD.
