The Roman fort Sablonetum, also known as Kastell Ellingen, was a Roman fortification near the Raetian Limes. Located in Bavaria, Germany, it is notable for its archaeological research.

History+

Kastell Ellingen was constructed around 120 AD during the early Hadrianic period as part of the expansion of the Raetian Limes. Initially built with wood and earth, it was converted to stone around 182 AD under Emperor Commodus, as evidenced by an inscription. This inscription mentions the Latin name Sablonetum, meaning “camp on the sand,” and refers to Governor Quintus Spicius Cerialis. The fort was likely evacuated and abandoned around 233 AD during the Alamannic Wars, without traces of burning or destruction.
