Roman Fortress Sostra
The Roman fort Sostra, an ancient fortification, is located in Bulgaria and bears witness to the former Roman presence in the region. Its strategic position on an important Roman road made it a significant military outpost.
History+
The construction of Sostra fort began around the year 147, commissioned by Emperor Antoninus Pius. It served as a crucial point along the Roman road leading from the Danube to Philippopolis (modern-day Plovdiv). In 249, the fort was destroyed by the Goths. Five years later, by order of Emperor Gallienus, Sostra was rebuilt, a process that took over 30 years and resulted in walls ten meters high. However, in 378, the fort was once again devastated by the Goths and was not reconstructed thereafter.

The remains of the Roman fort Sostra are situated in the village of Lomets, in the Trojan district, within the Lovech region of Bulgaria. It is located at an altitude of approximately 292 meters above sea level.
