The remains of the roman Castle can be visited

The Roman fort of Storgosia, a significant ancient site, is located in present-day Pleven in Northern Bulgaria. Originally a Roman way station, it evolved into a late antique fortress and settlement, distinguished by its strategic location and military importance.

History+

The origins of Storgosia date back to the 2nd and 1st millennia BC, with Stone Age and Bronze Age settlements in the area of today's Kaylaka Park. In the 1st millennium BC, a Thracian settlement named Storgosia was established here, its name later adopted by the Romans. A vexillation of Legio I Italica, whose main base was in Novae, was stationed here. After 238 AD, invasions by Goths and other barbarian tribes led to the fortification of the complex. By the early 4th century, the fortified area covered 31,000 m², protected by a 2.20 m thick wall. Archaeological finds include two gates, three defensive towers, residential buildings, a large basilica, and a public granary. Under Emperor Justinian I, the city was rebuilt in the 6th century and existed until the beginning of Slavic settlement in the late 6th century. The Slavs renamed the rebuilt settlement Kamenez. To its north, another settlement named Pleven emerged, which later merged with Kamenez and was first documented in 1266.
