Roman Castle Vetoniana

Around 90 AD, construction of Fort Vetoniana began, initially as a wood-and-earth structure. It served to monitor an ancient crossing at the Pfünz stream and a central road intersection. Later, during the reign of Emperor Antoninus Pius (138–161), the fort was rebuilt in stone. The Cohors I Breucorum civium Romanorum was stationed here and also participated in the reconstruction of Fort Böhming. The fort, which encompassed a skewed rectangle of approximately 189 by 145 meters, featured four gates with double entrances and flanking towers, as well as round corners with watchtowers. The double pointed ditch surrounding the complex is still well preserved on the western wall. In 1998, further explorations were carried out during construction work, and the finds from Pfünz continue to provide material for new studies.

The Roman Fort Vetoniana is located in Walting-Pfünz in the district of Eichstätt, Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approx. 423 m above sea level.

The remains of the Roman fort are now accessible to visitors. Particularly noteworthy are the remnants of the double pointed ditch, partly carved into the rock. Some structural elements were partially reconstructed in a restrained manner in 1960, such as the southeastern corner tower. Between 1992 and 1994, a reconstruction of the north gate, the northwest tower, and the intervening rampart was carried out, although it does not fully correspond to the archaeological findings. The interior of the fort grounds continues to be used for agricultural purposes.
