Roman Milecastle 42, also known as Cawfields, is a Roman fort that was once part of Hadrian's Wall.
History+
The structure was built by Legio II Augusta, as indicated by a dedication slab found during excavations. The first archaeological investigations took place in 1847 and 1848. Further excavations in 1936 revealed that it was a milecastle with a short axis and a Type I gateway. Milecastle 42 was a component of Hadrian's Wall, serving to monitor and defend the Roman border.
