The Roman Theatre AVGVSTA RAVRICA is an impressive testament to ancient architecture, located in Augst in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland. As part of the former Roman colony of Augusta Raurica, it offers a fascinating insight into the life and culture of the Romans north of the Alps.

History+

The Roman colony of Augusta Raurica was founded around 15 BC, after an earlier attempt in 44 BC by Lucius Munatius Plancus may not have progressed beyond formal acts or occurred at a different location. The settlement developed into a significant Roman city with an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 inhabitants. During its heyday from the 1st to 3rd century AD, Augusta Raurica boasted all the amenities of a Roman metropolis, including a theatre, an amphitheatre, forums, an aqueduct, and baths. Around 250 AD, the city was severely damaged by a strong earthquake and later further destroyed by Alamannic invasions and marauding Roman troops. This led to the formation of two smaller settlements, which form the core of today's Augst and Kaiseraugst.
