In Bordeaux, in the Gironde department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France, lie the remains of the Roman Theater Burdigala. This ancient structure originated as a Celtic settlement in the 3rd century BC and rose to become the capital of the province of Aquitania under Roman rule.

The city of Burdigala, modern-day Bordeaux, experienced a period of prosperity under Roman rule, lasting several centuries. Its strategically favorable location as a seaport and the viticulture practiced even then significantly contributed to its wealth. Despite the swampy surroundings, which were unsuitable for settlement, Burdigala was founded purely for strategic reasons.
