Roman Theatre Epomanduodurum
Near the municipality of Mandeure in the Franche-Comté region of France, lie the remains of the Roman Theater of Epomanduodurum. This structure is one of the largest Gallo-Roman amphitheaters preserved to this day.
History+
Present-day Mandeure was known as Epomanduodurum in Roman times, though the exact origin of this name, whether Celtic or Roman, remains unclear. The city developed into a center. Besides the theater, considered one of the largest of its kind in Gaul, excavations have also uncovered the foundations of Roman baths and residential houses.
Location+
The ancient site is situated in Mandeure, in the Doubs department, within the Franche-Comté region of France. It lies at an elevation of approximately 333 meters above sea level.
