Roman Theatre Ricciacus
The Roman Theater Ricciacus in Dalheim, Luxembourg, is an impressive testament to ancient architecture and a significant relic of a once-flourishing Roman settlement. It once accommodated thousands of spectators and is now an accessible historical monument.
History+
The origins of the Ricciacus settlement date back to a Treverian predecessor settlement. In 18/17 BC, Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa established a resting and staging post here along important Roman trade routes connecting Metz with Trier and Lyon with Aachen. Around 70/71 AD, the vicus underwent a comprehensive redesign, with wooden structures being replaced by solid stone buildings. The heyday of the approximately 25-hectare settlement in the 3rd century AD saw the construction of numerous public buildings, including an inn, several temples, thermal baths, and a theater capable of holding 3,500 to 4,000 people. However, the settlement was destroyed by Germanic invasions around 275 AD and again around 353/355 AD, finally being abandoned in 407 AD.
