Roman Theatre Vesunna
The Roman Theater of Vesunna in Périgueux, part of the once-flourishing Roman city of Vesunna, stands in the Dordogne.
History+
The origins of Périgueux trace back to the Celtic Petrocorii. Following the Roman conquest of Gaul in 52 BC, the settlement was developed into a Roman city named Vesunna. Vesunna evolved into a regional center. The city had an amphitheater with a capacity of 10,000 spectators and was encircled by a city wall. Only remnants of both structures survive today. The amphitheater now consists of only a few wall fragments within a park, while the Gallo-Roman city wall has largely been integrated into later residential buildings.
Location+
The Roman Theater of Vesunna is located in Périgueux, in the Dordogne department, which belongs to the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 101 m above sea level.
