Roman Theater Vindonissa
The Roman Theater Vindonissa in Windisch, Canton Aargau, Switzerland, is a significant testament to the region's Roman past. As part of the former legionary camp Vindonissa, strategically located at the confluence of the Aare and Reuss rivers, it provided entertainment for Roman soldiers and the civilian population.
History+
The history of Vindonissa dates back to pre-Roman times, when a Celtic oppidum occupied the spur between the Aare and Reuss. After the Roman conquest of the Central Plateau in 15 BC, a smaller base was established here. In 14 AD, Vindonissa was expanded into a legionary camp by Legio XIII Gemina, after the Rhine had been declared the empire's new northern border. Following an initial expansion around 21 AD and a further enlargement around 30 AD, Legio XXI Rapax was stationed there around 44/45 AD, replacing wooden structures with stone buildings. After unrest in the Year of the Four Emperors in 69 AD, Legio XI Claudia took over the camp until it was relocated to the Danube in 101 AD. After a period without military presence, Vindonissa was re-occupied militarily around 270 AD following an Alamannic invasion and became part of the Danube-Iller-Rhine Limes, until it was abandoned in the 5th century.
