Roman Theatre (Theatrum) Vetera
The Roman Theatrum Vetera in Xanten, North Rhine-Westphalia, is an impressive testament to Roman architecture and a significant ancient archaeological site. It was once part of the Vetera legionary camps, which were among the most important garrisons on the northern flank of the Roman Empire.
History+
Vetera was the name of two successive Roman legionary camps that belonged to the Lower Germanic Limes. Vetera I existed from 13/12 BC to 70 AD and served as an important staging base for Roman expansionist efforts east of the Rhine. It was located on the southern slope of the Fürstenberg, a glacial moraine surrounded by swamps and bogs in antiquity. Vetera II was built in 71 AD, about one and a half kilometers east of Vetera I, on a flood-free low terrace of the Rhine, and existed until 275/276. Research distinguishes between the two camps, which were approximately 1,500 meters apart. The name Vetera, first mentioned by Tacitus, may derive from a pre-Roman settlement of the Cugerni.
