Roman Theatre (Theatrum) Vetera
In Xanten, North Rhine-Westphalia, the Roman Theatrum Vetera is an ancient archaeological site. It was once part of the Vetera legionary camps, which were among the most important garrisons on the northern flank of the Roman Empire.
History+
Vetera was the name of two successive Roman legionary camps that belonged to the Lower Germanic Limes. Vetera I existed from 13/12 BC to 70 AD and served as a staging base for Roman expansionist efforts east of the Rhine. It was located on the southern slope of the Fürstenberg, a glacial moraine surrounded by swamps and bogs in antiquity. Vetera II was built in 71 AD, about one and a half kilometers east of Vetera I, on a flood-free low terrace of the Rhine, and existed until 275/276. Research distinguishes between the two camps, which were approximately 1,500 meters apart. The name Vetera, first mentioned by Tacitus, may derive from a pre-Roman settlement of the Cugerni.
