Rosenbachpalais

The Rosenbachpalais or Rosenbachhof on Rennweg bears the house number Residenzplatz 3, thus standing in the heart of Würzburg, next to the Residenz built after it. It borders the Residenzplatz to the north.

It was built around 1700 by Antonio Petrini for Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Greiffenclau. From 1720, it temporarily served as the Prince-Bishop's residence during the long construction period of the new magnificent palace, which was then also named Residenz.

The building is a two-wing complex with a hip roof, extending away from the square. Above the archway sit two large griffon claw coats of arms under the princely hat of the then builder, even though his successor Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn was the first resident to move into what was then the city palace. From this time on, the bishops no longer resided in the Marienfeste above the city but in its midst.

Its current use is by the Bavarian State Office for Finance and by the administration of the State Court Cellar (Staatlicher Hofkeller). The Vinothek of the Staatlicher Hofkeller, opened in 2008, is also located in the Rosenbachpalais/-hof.
