Town Fortification Rostock-Kröpeliner Gate

The Kröpeliner Tor in Rostock is a part of the former city wall, forming the western boundary of Kröpeliner Straße.

Around 1270, the Kröpeliner Tor was built in Gothic style as part of Rostock's city fortifications. As early as 1255, a wooden gate stood at this location. Following the unification of the three city centers in 1265, construction began on a stone fortification system with walls, towers, and gates. The Kröpeliner Tor was first mentioned in a document in 1280 and originally had two stories, which is still visible in the different stone colors. Around 1400, five stories were added, raising it to a height of 54 meters. A Neo-Gothic annex was added in 1847. During a restoration in 1905, a griffin was inserted into the pointed arch blind niche.
