Rotes (Red) Castle

The Red Castle was built in the 16th century by the noble family of Harstall and is one of the most important Renaissance half-timbered buildings in the Wartburg district. Renovations were carried out in the 17th and 18th centuries. Until early 1945, it served as the central training school for female leaders of the Reich Labor Service of the Gau Thuringia. After the end of the war, the art-historically valuable interior was lost. Since 1952, the castle has been used as a retirement and nursing home.
