Rotes (Red) Castle
The Red Castle was built in 1574-76 as a widow's residence for Duchess Dorothea Susanna. Underground passages connected it with the City Palace and the Green Castle. In the 18th century, the Free Drawing School, founded by Johann Wolfgang Goethe and Friedrich Justin Bertuch, was located here; later it served as a ministerial building. Today it houses the study center of the Duchess Anna Amalia Library.
