Rot Castle

The Rotschlössle was first depicted on a city view in 1559. Initially, it was owned by mayors such as Josef König and later Ulrich Dorn. In the 18th century, the castle passed to the Neubronner patrician family from Ulm, whose name it temporarily bore. The year 1634 is significant, as the Swedish Field Marshal Gustaf Horn resided here. A year later, during a plague epidemic, it served as the seat of the Kempten city council. Around 1850, the building was used for residential purposes and a cheese dairy. The municipality of St. Mang acquired the castle in 1927 and converted it into apartments. After the incorporation of St. Mang into the city of Kempten in 1972, the property became municipal. A renovation, decided in 1986, was completed in 1990, after which the Rotschlössle found its current purpose as the district library of the Orangerie.
