Albeck Castle (Ruin)

Traces of settlement from the Bronze Age were found at this site, and around 380 AD, the Alemanni fortified the area. After 910, Count Alwig I of Sulz is mentioned as the rebuilder. The Counts of Sulz first appear in documents in 1095. Through marriage, the castle passed to the House of Geroldseck in 1251/52. Under Heinrich I of Hohengeroldseck and Count of Sulz, King Rudolf of Habsburg granted city rights to the town of Sulz below in 1284. At the end of the 13th century, the castle was expanded by the Barons of Geroldseck. Although the town of Sulz was conquered in 1414 during a feud against Bubenhofen, Albeck Castle held out. In 1469, Count Eberhard im Bart besieged the castle with a large force and captured it on October 3, 1471. Hans von Geroldseck and his three sons were taken prisoner. Two years later, in 1473, the Geroldseckers renounced their possessions and received compensation from Count Eberhard of Württemberg. During the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), the castle was repeatedly occupied by Bavarian troops and renovated through forced labor.
