Old Castle (Ruin) Neuburg

The origins of the Old Castle likely date back to the late 10th century. A document from Henry II in 1007 mentions a chamber of the castle “Nouumburg,” which is probably this site, receiving its current name later to distinguish it from the town and the palace. In 1197, Henry VI granted the office of Neuburg, including the castle, as a fief to his marshal Henry von Kalden. During the Meranian Feud in 1246/47, the fortress was captured by the Wittelsbachs. Further destruction occurred in 1386 during Bavaria's war against the Rhenish League, after which the castle was not rebuilt.
