Old Castle (Ruin) (Padberg)

The origins of the Old Castle Padberg date back to the early 12th century, when the Counts of Padberg began construction on the Altenhagen. As early as around 1120, after the extinction of the older line of counts, the complex reverted to the Archbishops of Cologne, who re-granted it to a ministerial family also named von Padberg. In 1217, Gottschalk II von Padberg was forced to open the castle as an Offenhaus to the Archbishops of Cologne. In the 14th century, the family split into the Old and New House of Padberg, with the latter building its own castle on the Neuenhagen. During a feud between Cologne and the County of Waldeck in 1342, the Old Castle was temporarily occupied by Cologne troops.
