Altenberg Castle (Ruin)
The Altenberg ruin is located in the Swiss municipality of Füllinsdorf in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. It lies on the Büechlihau ridge, a steep hill in the forest.
There are no documented mentions of the castle, and the origin of the Schönthal monastery's property in Füllinsdorf, recorded in 1226, is unknown. Normally, this monastic property suggests former noble land ownership. Archaeological finds confirm that the castle was built in the 11th century. When the castle fell into disrepair is not known.
Layout+
The entire complex is elongated and consisted of a main building with considerable dimensions of 8 x 15 meters, to which a curtain wall was attached. A surrounding wall is set further into the slope and enclosed a larger forecourt. On both transverse sides, the castle was secured by approach obstacles. To the northwest by a prominent neck ditch, to the southeast by section ditches and a pre-positioned rampart.
Between 1982 and 1987, excavations took place at the castle, and many witnesses of past times were found. On this occasion, the remains of the walls were conserved, and in 1987, it could then be handed over to the public.
