Altenburg Castle (Ruin)
The Altenburg, also known as Weiler Castle, Weilerburg, Altenberg, is a castle ruin in the Altenburg district of the market town Weiler-Simmerberg in the district of Lindau in Bavaria.
The spur castle was built in the 13th century by Eberhard von Weiler, who at the time gave his name to "Weilerburg", and was mentioned in the mid-13th century as being in the possession of the Lords of Weiler, who were probably vassals of the Abbot of St. Gallen.
The daughters of Hans Wilhelm von Weiler († 1557), the last male member of the Lords of Weiler zu Altenburg, sold the Altenburg lordship, including the castle, to the House of Habsburg in 1569. The buyer was Archduke Ferdinand II, the brother of Emperor Maximilian II. The Altenburg subsequently served as the official residence for the Austrian bailiffs of the Altenburg-Kellhöf court. In 1784, the castle was sold for demolition, and in 1826, stones from the ruin were still used for the church tower in Scheidegg. Only remnants of the rubble stone masonry of the former castle complex remain.
