Altenburg Castle (Ruin)

The origins of the Altenburg date back to the 13th century, when it was built by Eberhard von Weiler, whose name is reflected in the designation Weilerburg. In the mid-13th century, the complex was owned by the Lords of Weiler, who likely served as retainers for the Abbot of St. Gallen. Following the death of Hans Wilhelm von Weiler in 1557, the last male descendant of this line, his daughters sold the Altenburg lordship, including the castle, to the House of Habsburg in 1569. The purchaser was Archduke Ferdinand II, brother of Emperor Maximilian II.
