The Altenschönegg ruin, also known as the Roman Tower, stands on the outskirts of the municipality of Oberschönegg.

History+

The first documented mention of Altenschönegg Castle dates back to 1220. It served as the ancestral seat of an imperial ministerial family and became an administrative office of the Prince-Bishopric of Augsburg from 1355. Between the 13th and 15th centuries, the complex underwent extensive expansions. Its destruction occurred during the German Peasants' War by the “Red Banner.” Only the keep, built in 1462, partially survived.
