Altenschönegg Castle (Ruin)
The castle ruin Altenschönegg, also called Alten-Schönegg, Altschönegg, Oberschönegg, Schönegg and today Römerturm (Roman Tower), is a castle ruin at the exit of the municipality of Oberschönegg in the direction of Babenhausen in the Swabian district of Unterallgäu in Bavaria.
The castle was first mentioned in 1220, was the seat of an important imperial ministerial family and, from 1355, an administrative office (Pflegamt) of the Prince-Bishopric of Augsburg. In the 13th to 15th centuries, the castle was expanded and destroyed in the German Peasants' War by the "Red Banner", with the keep from 1462 partially preserved.
In 1809, Imperial Prince Anselm Maria Fugger von Babenhausen acquired the square 30-meter-high brick keep with a plinth story made of Nagelfluh (puddingstone) ashlar, had it repaired, and made it accessible to the public as a viewing tower, known as the Römerturm. Weinried, the so-called "Seven Hills Village", was also owned by the Fugger family.
