Old castle Neuenbürg
Neuenbürg's history around the year 1000 was primarily shaped by the Counts Palatine of Tübingen, the Counts of Calw-Vaihingen, the Counts of Eberstein, the Margraves of Baden, and the Counts of Württemberg. The Umlaufberg (meander hill) as a strategically favorable location and the iron ore mines were likely decisive for the settlement of the wider surrounding area.
The Counts of Württemberg acquired Neuenbürg around 1320 and established an administrative seat for the town and five surrounding communities. The oldest buildings around the castle date from this period. The builder of the ruin of the rear castle is unknown.
