Altnußberg Castle (Ruin)

The hilltop castle Altnußberg was built between 1174 and 1194 by the Lords of Nußberg, ministeriales of the Counts of Bogen, as their ancestral seat. The castle later passed into the possession of the Lords of Degenberg. In 1310, Konrad von Nußberg left the complex and founded Neunußberg Castle. During the Böckler War, an uprising of the Bavarian Forest knights against Archduke Albrecht IV of Bavaria in 1468 and 1469, Hans von Degenberg played a leading role in the Böcklerbund. Consequently, after its surrender by castellan Ratzko von Rayol, the castle was set on fire and razed. Extensive reconstruction measures began in 1983.

The Altnußberg ruin is located in Altnußberg, a district of the municipality of Geiersthal, in the Regen district of Bavaria, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 654 meters above sea level.
