Altnußberg Castle (Ruin)
Altnußberg Castle is a castle ruin on the Schlossberg northwest of the municipality of Geiersthal in the Regen district in Bavaria.
The hilltop castle was built between 1174 and 1194 by the Lords of Nußberg ("de Nuzbach 1125"), who were ministeriales of the Counts of Bogen, as their ancestral seat. The castle was later sold to the Lords of Degenberg, and in 1310 Konrad von Nußberg left the castle and built Neunußberg Castle. During the uprising of the Bavarian Forest knights from 1468 to 1469 against the policies of Archduke Albrecht IV of Bavaria, known as the Böckler War, Hans von Degenberg was one of the leaders of the Böckler Alliance. Therefore, after its surrender by the castle captain Ratzko von Rayol, the castle was set on fire and razed. From 1983, the castle was partially rebuilt.
Current Use+
Today, the keep serves as an observation tower. In the museum building in the immediate vicinity of the castle ruins, finds from the excavations are exhibited,
e.g., weapons, jewelry, household items, and tools from the 13th to 15th centuries. The registry office of Geiersthal offers weddings in the museum building upon request.
Description+
After excavations and partial reconstruction, the large castle complex now shows the completely restored 22-meter-high pentagonal keep on a base area of 7 by 7.5 meters and a wall thickness of 1.5 meters, the foundation walls of the entire castle complex with a 1.5-meter-thick ring wall, as well as the ruins of bastions and residential buildings, utility buildings, and the castle chapel, and a considerable cistern. Furthermore, the remains of the oldest part of the castle (predecessor castle) with its courtyard can be seen.
