The Altwinnenden Ruin, also known as Bürg Castle, is a hilltop castle ruin above the Höfen-Stöckenhof road in the Bürg district of Winnenden. Today, mainly the keep remains from the complex.

History+

The origins of Altwinnenden Castle date back to the first half of the 12th century when it was built by the Lords of Winnenden on a spur. In 1181, Gottfried von Winnenden constructed the keep on a mountain spur. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1210 as “castrum Winidum.” Further expansions of the complex took place in 1212 and 1225. Besides the Lords of Winnenden, the Lords of Neuffen are also named as owners. The castle began to decay in the 15th century and was dismantled between 1536 and 1538, with only the keep remaining.
