Amöneburg Castle (Ruin)

Already during the Merovingian period, there was a fortification on the mountain. Boniface used the Frankish fortress from 721 as the starting point for his missionary activities, establishing a small monastery and a church dedicated to Archangel Michael there. During the Carolingian era, a hilltop castle developed, although its importance waned from the 9th century onwards. In 1145, the Archbishopric of Mainz built a new castle, which was destroyed by Landgrave Ludwig of Thuringia in 1165 but immediately rebuilt. After being pledged in 1183, the castle was again occupied by Mainz castlemen from 1222 and became the administrative seat of the Archbishopric's Upper Hessian possessions from 1273.
