Asuel Castle (Ruin)
The Asuel Ruin, a former castle complex, is perched on a rocky summit above the village of Asuel in the Swiss canton of Jura. Its history is marked by destruction and reconstruction, and today the remains bear witness to a once significant medieval fortress.
History+
The origins of Asuel Castle date back to the 11th century. In 1356, the complex was severely damaged by an earthquake and again destroyed by the people of Basel in 1374. Despite these setbacks, the castle was always rebuilt. The noble family of Asuel, known for over three centuries, died out in 1480 with the death of Jean-Lutholde. By the 16th century, the complex was already referred to as a ruin.

The Asuel Ruin is located at an altitude of approximately 638 meters above sea level, above the village of Asuel in the Porrentruy district, Canton of Jura, Switzerland.
On site+
Visitors can today explore the remains of the curtain wall and the foundations of a round tower in the north. In the center of the castle courtyard, the remnants of a rectangular masonry structure are visible, which possibly belonged to a chapel. Traces of a longer building are visible on the east side, and in the southwest corner on the rocky summit, there is the ruin of a watchtower. The ruin is accessible to the public.
