Aue Castle (Ruin)

Construction of this lowland castle likely began around the year 1200. The noble family von Aue is first mentioned in a document in 1272. In the 14th century, Knight Albert von Aue served as a castellan in Eschwege. The von Aue family died out in 1435. By the end of the 16th century, the Lords of Eschwege erected a manor house on this site. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was set on fire by Croatian troops in 1637 and burned down to its stone ground floor, after which it was not rebuilt.

The Aue Ruin is accessible to visitors. Archaeological investigations by the Hessian State Office for Monument Preservation took place in 2004 and are ongoing.
