Auerburg Castle (Ruin)

Archaeological findings confirm that the castle rock was already settled in the Bronze Age and that a first castle complex by local noble families existed as early as the 12th century. The Auerburg was first mentioned in 1329 in the Wittelsbach House Treaty of Pavia, after it had passed into the possession of the Wittelsbachs. Its strategic location in the Inn Valley, between the castles of Kufstein, Thierberg, and Kirnstein, secured an important position for the Bavarian dukes. Around 1350, the Auerburg already served as a court and administrative seat for a steward. At the end of the 15th century, the castle was reinforced by the addition of a barbican.
