Bärenburg Castle (Ruin) (Andeer)

The exact period of Bärenburg Castle's construction remains unknown, as no written records exist. The Lords of Bärenburg were first mentioned in a document in 1257 with the brothers Konrad and Bartholomäus. From the 13th to the 15th century, this knightly family shaped the region as vassals of the Bishop of Chur and as ministerials of the Barons of Vaz. After the extinction of the Vaz family in 1338, they acquired further episcopal fiefs. The family died out in the male line around 1424. In 1443, the Lords of Werdenberg appeared as the new owners of Bärenburg. An event was the castle's destruction in 1450 during the Schams Feud by Schwyz and Glarus troops, after which reconstruction without the consent of the Gotteshausbund was forbidden.
