Bärnfels Castle (Ruin)

The origins of Bärnfels Castle likely date back to 1330, when Siboto I von Egloffstein, the founder of the Bärenfels line of this family, had the complex built. The first documented mention occurred on August 2, 1389, when Konrad Hans and Ulrich von Egloffstein zu Bärenfels had to pledge their outer bailey, the so-called lower fortress, to the Landgrave of Leuchtenberg after a feud. In 1483, the fief passed to the Gaillenreuth line of the Egloffsteins, but the last enfeoffment by the Leuchtenberg landgraves took place in 1495. The castle was destroyed during the Peasants' War in 1525 by Egloffstein subjects, after which it was never fully rebuilt.
