Bärwalde Castle (Ruin)

In Bärwalde, the structurally secured ruin of a medieval former water castle can be visited. The last "lords of the castle" until 1945 were also the von Arnims.

The castle was probably built in the 13th century by the Lords of Beerwalde. In 1353, Margrave Ludwig the Roman pledged the castle to the von Ileburg family. In 1370, the castle was acquired by the von Arnims and remained in their possession until 1945. The castle was destroyed several times, including in the Hussite Wars in 1429 and in the Thirty Years' War in 1637. It was rebuilt each time. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle was converted into a baroque palace. In 1945, the castle was plundered and set on fire. Since then, it has been a ruin.

The castle was a moated castle, surrounded by a wide moat. The main castle was a rectangular complex with four wings and a courtyard. In the corners were round towers. The castle was protected by a curtain wall and several outbuildings. Today, only parts of the outer walls, the remains of two towers, and the vaulted cellars are preserved. The castle chapel, built in the 15th century, is also preserved as a ruin.

The ruin of Bärwalde Water Castle is a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts. The castle grounds are freely accessible. Guided tours are offered regularly. In the summer months, the castle is used as a venue for cultural events such as concerts and theater performances. The castle is also a popular motif for photographers.

Future Plans

There are plans to further secure and partially reconstruct the ruin in the coming years. The aim is to make the castle's history even more tangible for visitors and to create additional spaces for cultural events. The reconstruction of the castle chapel is also planned.
