Baldenstein Castle (Ruin)
The Baldenstein ruin, also known as the Old Castle, is a castle ruin on a protruding rock spur at 712 meters above sea level above the Fehlatal valley, about two kilometers south-southwest of the town of Gammertingen in the Sigmaringen district in Baden-Württemberg.
The hilltop castle was built between 1050 and 1100 by the Counts of Gammertingen, presumably as their ancestral seat. Around 1150, the castle was destroyed by a fire without military action and was not rebuilt. The Counts of Gammertingen, whose burial site was found in 1983 in Gammertingen's St. Michael's Church, died out between 1170 and 1180. The first excavations took place in 1933, and from 1963 to 1965, the ruin was uncovered and restored.
Description+
The castle complex had a core castle in the northwest corner as a solid stone house (donjon) with a footprint of 19 by 15 meters and a wall thickness of approximately two meters, with two south-facing embrasures in round-arched niches on the ground floor. To the east, the stone house was extended by a ship's bow-like projection. To the east of the complex, on a footprint of 13 by 20 meters, are the remains of a keep, which possibly also served as a gate tower. A section ditch separated the castle from the plateau.
During excavations, valuable finds were made, such as game pieces, glass fragments, and metal spurs, which have already been shown in various exhibitions.
