Bernegg Castle (Ruin) (Calfreisen)

The construction of Bernegg Castle is dated to the mid or second half of the 13th century. It served as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Calfreisen, who are documented between 1259 and 1286 and belonged to the local nobility of Schanfigg. This family served the Barons of Vaz and the Diocese of Chur. Later, the castle passed to the Underweger family, likely through marriage. In the 15th century, the complex came into the possession of the Sprecher family, who are believed to have given it the name «Bernegg». By around 1550, the castle was already a ruin.
