Bibiton Castle (Ruin) (Kaltbrunn)

Bibiton Castle near Kaltbrunn in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen is today a castle ruin.

Bibiton Castle originally stood on the eastern edge of Lake Tuggen between Tuggen and Kaltbrunn, which silted up in the 16th century. Today, the remains of the lowland castle are located in the Linth Plain northeast of Benken train station at around.

The ruin consists of the remains of a tower castle, of which only wall remnants have been preserved. It was built with fieldstones from the surrounding area.

It was probably built in the early 13th century by the Counts of Rapperswil, who, as castellan-bailiffs of Einsiedeln Abbey, erected several fortifications in the Linth Plain during this period, including Grynau Castle.

In the 14th century, the castle became the seat of feudal tenants of the Counts of Toggenburg. In 1358, a squire named Kraft Schnode resided here, and until 1393, the Austrian nobles of Bruchi lived at Bibiton. Subsequently, the castle became the seat of the Meier von Kaltbrunn, who are mentioned in the years 1419 and 1428. In 1444, it was destroyed in the Old Zurich War and abandoned in the 15th century.

In 1863, the remains of the castle were leveled by the owner of the land. In 1928, the local historian Johann Fäh acquired the area and carried out excavations in 1936/1937. During the investigations, it was discovered that the first floor of the tower castle was hidden in the ground and its foundations rested on a pile grating. The exposed wall remains have since been largely covered again. The finds included various tools, stove tiles, horseshoes, and remnants of a harness.
