Bieberstein Castle (Ruin)

Bieberstein Castle is a castle ruin on a rocky slope above the Wiehl valley near Bieberstein in the Oberbergisch district in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The hilltop castle was built in the 14th century, its first documented mention was in 1342. It was once a mighty rubble stone building with considerable wall thicknesses and received its current still visible form in the late Middle Ages. The castle was inhabited until the 19th century, but was then abandoned, so that it fell into severe disrepair. Today, only wall remains and enclosing walls of the castle are preserved.
During investigations in 1933, a terraced basement was uncovered. The researchers did not find confirmation of the legend of an underground passage that connected Bieberstein with the village of Grünenbach and through which the castle inhabitants were said to have been supplied with fresh food during a siege.
The Owners+
The owners of Bieberstein Castle were already dependent on the Lordship of Homburg as Homburg officials in the 16th century. For this reason, the castle is an interesting testimony to the territorial history of the Bergisches Land, and even if it may no longer possess a high monument value in its current ruinous form from a castle research perspective, it still holds this historical value for the regional studies in the area of the Lordship of Homburg.
Three gravestones from the 16th/17th centuries have been preserved in the Marienhagen church, which refer to the former lords of Bieberstein Castle, namely Gerlach von Karthusen, Albert von Lixfelt and Just Lixfelt.
