Bischofstein Castle (Ruin)

Around 1250, the Lords of Eptingen, who had inherited the property of the extinct Itkon family, built Bischofstein Castle. The fortress was handed over to the Bishop of Basel for protection and received back as a fief, which is also reflected in the castle's name. The complex was built in two phases: first, the original castle with its irregular curtain wall and a round keep. Later, it was extended with a protected cistern and a new gate system with a bailey. Archaeological finds such as stove tiles, glazed windows, and metal objects indicate the prosperity of its inhabitants. It is believed that material from the already decaying Itkon ruin was also used in its construction.
