In Oberriet in the canton of St. Gallen, the Blatten ruin, a historic castle, is situated at approximately 443 meters above sea level. Its remains are today an accessible testament to medieval architecture.
History+
The origins of Blatten Castle date back to 1277, when Abbot Rumo von Ramstein pledged it to Knight Ulrich von Ramschwag. The branch of the Lords of Ramschwag settled at Blatten was repeatedly involved in conflicts with the Abbey of St. Gallen during the 14th century. These disputes continued after 1400, as the knights attempted to align themselves with the rebellious Appenzellers, while other family members supported the abbey. Initial conservation work on the castle's masonry began in 1911. A comprehensive renovation of the residential tower took place in 1977, followed by the restoration of the enceinte and the remains of the castle gate in 1985.
