Bocholt Castle (Ruin) (Lobberich)

A “Burg Bocholtz” was first mentioned in a document in 1096. Around 1242, the name “Gerald de Bocholt” appeared, marking the beginning of the noble family of Bocholt. The castle served as a fief of the County of Geldern and protected the old Roman road from Trier to Cologne. In 1358, the complex was expanded into a fortress. In the mid-15th century, specifically 1450, an outer bailey with a farmstead was built. Through the marriage of Margereta von Bocholtz in 1748, the castle passed to Count Mirbach zu Harff, who leased it to common tenants. It is believed that the main castle was destroyed during the Seven Years' War (1756–1763).
