The Boyneburg ruin, also known as Bemelburch, is a hilltop castle ruin located in the Werra-Meißner district of Hesse, Germany. It sits atop the forested Boyneburg mountain, a limestone peak with steep slopes.

History+

The history of Boyneburg dates back to the 11th century, with initial fortifications likely built by the Counts of Northeim. An early documented mention occurred in 1107, when Emperor Henry V had the castle destroyed due to raids. However, it was soon rebuilt and served as an imperial fief. In the 12th century, Boyneburg was an imperial stronghold, visited multiple times by Frederick I Barbarossa, including for a court day in 1166 and an imperial diet in 1188. The castle held strategic importance due to its location between key imperial estates. From 1292, it was granted as an hereditary imperial principality to Landgrave Henry I of Hesse, leading to long-standing disputes with the resident imperial ministeriales.
