Brahehus Castle
The Brahehus ruin stands as the remains of a once magnificent manor house in the Swedish municipality of Jönköping. Its exposed location on a hill above Lake Vättern once afforded it an impressive view and today makes it a striking testament to bygone eras.
History+
Construction of Brahehus began in 1637, commissioned by Per Brahe the Younger, who dedicated it to his wife Christina. Due to significant challenges in transporting building materials, caused by its hillside location, completion was delayed until the mid-1650s. As Christina had already passed away in 1650, the estate subsequently served as the Count's guesthouse. The finished building complex included a tall main building directly on the cliffs overlooking the lake, along with two square corner towers. After Per Brahe's death, the interior furnishings were removed, and the county fell to King Karl XI. In the autumn of 1708, a fire that originated in the neighboring village of Uppgränna completely destroyed the manor house.
