The Bramberg ruin, a former Würzburg administrative castle, sits atop an extinct volcanic cone in the Haßberge region of Bavaria, Germany.

History+

The origins of Bramberg probably date back to the 11th century, where it may have served to protect an important high road or as a bulwark against the then West Slavic population. The first documentary mention occurred in 1108, when the Lords of Bramberg were enfeoffed with the dominion. A predecessor structure was destroyed in 1168 by imperial order, allegedly due to robber baron activities. The true reasons likely lay in the power struggles between the prince-bishoprics of Würzburg and Bamberg. Later, the Würzburgers erected a new defensive structure at this site. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the castle was damaged and subsequently left to decay.
