Bring Castle (Ruin) (Edertal)

Bring Castle is a small, abandoned castle in the Eder Valley near Edertal-Bringhausen in the North Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg, whose remains lie on an island in today's Edersee.

After the construction of the Eder Dam in 1914, the castle hill became today's Liebesinsel (Love Island), which can be reached by boat or swimming from Bringhausen when the lake is at full capacity. At low water, usually in late summer or autumn, the former castle hill can also be reached on foot.

The date of the castle's construction is unknown. The builder is said to have been a Brunink, and "Burg Brunink" later became "Burg Bring". A "Knight of Bringhausen" was first mentioned in a document in 1196. However, it is presumed that the castle existed earlier. The Counts of Waldeck had a castle seat and an estate in Bringhausen here in the 15th century.

It is not known when the castle was abandoned or perhaps destroyed and subsequently fell into disrepair. In the 19th century, it was already a ruin with few remaining wall fragments; these now lie in the Edersee and are only visible at low water levels.

The village of Bringhausen, which was submerged after the construction of the Eder Dam, extended below the castle. Today, it is rebuilt and located about four kilometers east of the ruins.

Only minor wall remains are preserved, consisting mainly of foundations and cellar remains. Legends about knights and fantastical creatures, such as gnomes who are said to have guarded the gold of the Eder, entwine around the remaining fragments.
