West of Altdorf in the Upper Bavarian district of Eichstätt is the Brunneck ruin, a former late medieval noble castle.

History+

Brunneck Castle was built by the Lords of Heideck at the end of the 14th century. In 1413, Johann II of Heideck sold the “Veste Prunnekke” along with its associated rights and properties to the Prince-Bishopric of Eichstätt. Under Prince-Bishop Friedrich IV of Oettingen, the castle was expanded into a princely episcopal administrative seat after 1423. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the castle was occupied and plundered by the Mässing peasant band. In 1544, the Prince-Bishopric united Brunneck with the Titting administrative district. A castle chapel dedicated to Saint Alexius is documented for the year 1602. In the 17th century, the castle served only as the residence of episcopal foresters, before it fell into disrepair after 1691.
