Cartatscha Castle (Ruin) (Trun)

The tower of Cartatscha is situated on a terraced, descending moraine ridge above Trun, to the south of an old group of houses and the St. Valentin chapel.

What remains is a massive tower with a square footprint of 10.5 meters and a wall thickness of approximately 2.8 meters. The walls consist of unusually large, carefully hewn blocks and cornerstones with good edge dressing. There is a narrow embrasure on the west and east sides, and a single corbel stone protrudes from the south wall. A missing entrance in the visible walls suggests a further stone upper floor with a high entrance and living quarters, possibly covered by a projecting wooden superstructure. The absence of rubble and the clean horizontal demarcation of the walls suggest a planned demolition.

Former meager traces of a curtain wall in the west have slipped down the steep terrain. In the long term, the tower itself is likely to be threatened, as the erosion edge extends directly to the tower.

Written records about the origin and history of the castle are missing; based on its construction, a building period in the 13th century is assumed. It was probably the seat of a ministerialis or bailiff of Disentis Monastery, perhaps the ministerialis Olricus de Crestazia mentioned in 1261. When the castle was abandoned is not known.
